Preserved Media: Artists and Craftsmen Anthology
Artists and Craftsmen Anthology BAVC Media has worked with Survival Arts Media and the Peoples Video Theater through several grant-funded preservation projects. Howard Gutstadt and Ben Levine provided the Camp Jened videos for the Oscar-nominated film Crip Camp as part of the People's Video Theater / Survival Arts Media Archive, and was preserved by BAVC Media! And there’s more where that came from. Between 1976 and 1978, Survival Arts Media produced the Artists and Craftsmen Anthology in cooperation with the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library system. These mini-documentaries were produced using early black and white ½" video portapaks, and U-matic color camera recorders. The New York State Council on the Arts provided funding for the [...]
Upscaling with Composite vs. Component vs. Firewire
Upscaling with Composite vs. Component vs. Firewire by Tim Lake, Preservation Technician At BAVC Preservation, we pride ourselves in capturing the highest quality video transfers, as well as providing a range of options for how each transfer is delivered for preservation, editing, and access. Through this process, we can also re-time video content. For instance, the NTSC video format runs at 29.97 frames per second (fps). During upscaling, it's possible [...]

On the Preservation of the EastSide Arts Alliance DV collection
On the Preservation of the EastSide Arts Alliance DV collection by Tim Lake, Preservation Technician For over 10 years, BAVC Media has offered high-quality audiovisual preservation services at a reduced rate, through an initiative called the Preservation Access Program. Thanks to grant funding from National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) and Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, this program gives individuals and small organizations the opportunity to preserve their tape-based media without breaking the bank. Oftentimes, these are the collections that we feel best represent our core mission: to amplify a diverse set of voices that might otherwise go unheard. In [...]
