BAVC Media Announces the 11th Bi-Annual Preservation Access Program Recipients
Twice per year, BAVC Media’s Preservation Department selects a group of individuals, artists, and organization to receive funding for digitization and archival projects. These funds come from our Preservation Access Program, which is made possible by a generous grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Additionally, the digital files for any California-related materials are eligible to be stored and preserved by California Revealed, an initiative of the California State Library. We’re proud to announce the recipients of the 11th iteration of this program! The acceptees this round include documentary filmmakers, artists, dancers, cultural heritage institutions, and more! Celebrating BAVC Media’s Next Gen Youth Program
Throughout the year Next Gen students built a fun and supportive community where they learned new technical skills, met industry professionals, earned college credit, and discussed social justice issues all while creating media related to topics they are passionate about. In both the Fall and Spring semesters, students created their own media and developed their own stories in the form of animations, short films, and video games (just to name a few). They also had the opportunity to meet an array of guest speakers and panelists from companies like Pandora, Youtube, Oracle, and KQED with backgrounds in cinematography, graphic design, [...]

ICYMI: National MediaMaker Fellows Making Waves
Our 2017 National MediaMaker Fellows head to Washington D.C. this month for the 3rd annual Double Exposure Investigative Film Festival, which “celebrates the finest new films inspired by the investigative instinct.” Pausing on this phrase, it struck me just how often the projects that come out of the Fellowship began with a simple question, or a hunch or a scenario that required further investigation. We don’t often identify independent filmmakers as investigators, but I think that a sense of purposeful curiosity is the seed of many stories and a force which shapes the course of production. Every March we welcome [...]
Failed utopias and resilient publics: Interviews with BAVC Media’s 2017-18 Residents, Andrea Rodriguez and Erica Molesworth
Last month, BAVC Media announced Andrea Rodriguez and Erica Molesworth (pictured above) as the recipients of our 2017-18 Residency program. With support from the San Francisco Film Commission, the Residency builds on the successes of BAVC Media’s previous Artist-in-Residence program, offering participants a shared work space, industry-standard equipment, and opportunities to take advantage of BAVC Media’s courses and share out their projects with their creative peers and the public. Although Andrea and Erica have backgrounds in different disciplines (Andrea, in dance and interactive design, and Erica, in visual art with an emphasis on photography) and radically different creative practices, the [...]
From Freelance to Google, Video Production Pros Break it Down
September’s Tech Talk Tuesday featured Cleave Frink, Jr. Production Manager and Liz Cabrera, Producer of the Google Developer Studio, video production arm of the Google Engineering team. They gave us a glimpse into how they arrived to their current roles, advice on how to build a career in video production, and how different business settings can influence the types of roles available. And while both Cleave and Liz confirmed that the current video production market is competitive, especially in the corporate realm, demand continues to grow based on how the global population consumes media. So don’t give up! You [...]
Next Gen Alumni Reflection with Sylvia Colt-Lacayo
Three years ago, I was a scrawny, disabled, 8th grader who was always envious of my artistic family. Art runs in my blood, like a torch passed down my family tree, and I always felt like it wasn’t given to me. That was until I stumbled upon BAVC Media, a community of activists who make social change through their art. After applying to the Next Gen Program, I embarked on a journey I didn’t realize would change my life. I found BAVC Media through my older sister’s friend. She had this awesome blue hair and glasses, and knowing her felt [...]
