Stories from our community

For 45 years we have been opening doors for emerging media makers and professionals in the Bay Area, through training, artist development, apprenticeships, funding and more.

As we look forward to 2023 and celebrate the work we’ve done, we asked members of our community to share how BAVC Media has impacted their careers.

Check out our program assistant, Elizabeth Herrera’s BAVC story below!

Your contributions help us deliver programs, pay instructors, and offer subsidized classes to support our local media-making community. While we continue to rebuild revenue loss from the pandemic, we need your support now more than ever.

How did you come across BAVC Media?

I was introduced to BAVC during my time at Hamilton Families Transitional Housing. I was given the opportunity to help create a short film focused on family homelessness, titled What You’ll Remember. I was also offered classes, and then a job.

What doors did BAVC Media open for you?

Since becoming involved with BAVC so many doors have opened for me both professionally and personally. Meeting a network of wonderfully strong and talented individuals who are also compassionate and caring humans. Being able to work on film projects podcasts and so much more.

Where are you now in your media-making career?

I am currently working on my second short documentary project with BAVC that I will be directing! I’ve also been working on a feature-length fiction adaptation loosely based on our first film.

Describe something meaningful about your experience with BAVC Media.

BAVC Media has been so much more than a place to work. It has become my second family. Besides having the opportunity to work on my own personal passions, The work we do to help others learn, grow, and create keeps my heart full.

Donate to BAVC Media so we can continue to invest in the future of independent media making in the Bay Area.
