BRIDGES FELLOWSHIP (ages 18-24)
Q: What is the cost of the Bridges Fellowship?
A: FREE and students will receive a $500 upon completion of the program
Q: Where will classes be held?
A: All classes are virtually held on Zoom (with weekly optional in-person workshop/lab days at the BAVC Media office)
Q: What is the application process like for Bridges?
A: Applicants will complete our online application, receive an email from us confirming that we have received your application, and be asked to schedule a time to complete a phone interview with a Youth Programs Team member regarding your interest in the fellowship and your experience with filmmaking/storytelling. Following your phone interview, you will be followed up with via phone or email about whether you have been accepted into the fellowship program on a set date that can be found on the website and is updated each semester.
Q: Do I need to have my own computer/laptop?
A: Students who live in the Bay Area do not need to have their own computer/laptop to take part in our Youth Programs. Those in need of a reliable computer will have the opportunity to borrow one from BAVC Media for the duration of the semester. Students who live outside of the Bay will be required to have access to their own computer + reliable wifi.
Q: Do I need to have my own camera?
It is not required that students have their own camera in order to participate in the Bridges Fellowship. In light of the COVID pandemic and our program transitioning to online learning, we have adapted much of our curriculum to accommodate students using the cameras on their phones. Additionally, BAVC Media will be able to loan a limited number of DSLR cameras to students for the duration of the semester.
Q: Does BAVC Media provide equipment for students?
A: BAVC Media has a limited number of laptops and cameras that students can borrow for the duration of the semester. Certain classes will require other specific equipment to be borrowed by students and picked up from BAVC Media’s offices at the start of the semester and returned upon the semester’s completion.
Q: Can I receive high school/college credit for completing this program?
A: We do not offer high school/college credit for completing the Bridges Fellowship.
Q: What day / time do we need to be on the zoom call?
A: Bridges meets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays from 4:00PM-7:00PM
Q: What does a typical week look like in Bridges?
A: A typical week in Bridges consists of a series of 3 masterclasses (3 hours each) that one of our teaching artists leads (topics: Pre-Production, Production, Post-Production, etc.). Classes typically start off with a loose check-in, transition into a “hands on” demo and/or group discussion led by the instructor and an activity to apply that knowledge (i.e. putting together a storyboard, configuring shot list, etc.). Classes typically end with a reflection to debrief what was learned.
Q: How do you help students who are new to zoom?
A: Before the semester begins we ensure that students have a zoom account set up and during the class orientation we provide participants with a basic overview of Zoom. We also have a number of links to resources that can help students navigate zoom and other virtual tools. If more support is needed, please email youthprograms@bavc.org

A: Until further notice all classes will be online/virtual with an optional hybrid component in the fall.
Q: When will programming be completely in person?
A: We are closely adhering to San Francisco County and SFUSD guidelines around reopening for out of school programs. As updates become available, in addition to receiving the all clear to have in person programming (with social distancing guidance in place), we will keep participants informed via email.
Q: What do alumni of the Bridges Fellowship do once they’ve completed the program?
A: Many of our Bridges alumni go on to do work within the media industry. For example: Pixar, Lucas Film, Disney, High Resolves, and more.

A: Serial Storytellers is a scriptwriting program we offer to youth aged 18-24 years old. Please check our website for specific application dates and deadlines.
Q: What are the career coaching and workshop sessions like?
A: Career Coaching is 1-on-1 and meant to help participants set personal and professional goals with a career counselor. Bridges participants receive two 30 minute coaching sessions. Career Workshops consist of the following topics: Resume Writing, Interviewing Techniques, and Networking Skills. Workshops are open to all youth programs participants (schedule permitting).
Q: What are the expectations of being a participant in the program?
A: Participants are expected to attend all class sessions (attendance should be in good standing), participate in class (via assignments, discussions, activities, etc.), and complete a final project.
Q: Do you have a sample of the curriculum or a lesson plan that has been used in the past?
A: Yes. Please email youthprograms@bavc.org for a class specific lesson plan sample.
Q: How much do participants earn upon completing a semester? How do students earn a stipend?
A: $500 for Bridges Fellows, dependent upon participation and attendance.
Q: At what point will I be dropped from the class?
A: Students who miss two classes without communicating with their instructor will receive an email, phone call, and text message asking to check in and figure out how we can best support them making it to class. If we receive no response at this point in the process, students will be dropped from the program and receive an email notification making them aware of this.
SERIAL STORYTELLERS (AGES 18-24)

Q: What is the application process like for Serial Storytellers – Scripted/ Fiction and Unscripted/ DocuSeries?
A: Applicants will complete our online application and will receive an email within at least a week before the program start date of your acceptance into the program.
Q: When will I be notified?
A: After scheduling and completing your phone interview, students will hear back from us within 1 weeks about your acceptance into the program. We will be scheduling phone interviews on a rolling basis.

A: YES!! You will be expected to write anywhere from 1-10 pages per week between classes.

A: The number of students who apply ranges from semester to semester. No matter the number of applicants, we accept 12 students into each track (12 for scripted, 12 for unscripted).
NEXT GEN PROGRAM (ages 14-17)

Q: What is the application process like for Next Gen?
A: Applicants will complete our online application, receive a confirmation email from us that we received your application, and hear back from us at least one month before the start of the program about the status of their application (set decision date updated on the website each semester). If the track you applied for is full, you will be offered a spot in your second choice track or added to a waiting list for your first choice track.

A: Next Gen students will not be asked to do work outside of class aside from collecting material (video footage, audio recordings, drawings, etc.) that you wish to use for your personal projects. Though it is not an expectation of the program, there may be times that you chose to put in extra time and effort outside of class to further develop your project.

A: We do not offer high school/college credit for completing the Next Gen program.

A: Factory, BUMP, & Animation is on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 4:30-6:30PM
Game Code Design is on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 2:30PM-4:30PM
Q: What does a typical week look like in Next Gen?
A: A typical week in Next Gen consists of two 2-hour classes taught by one of our teaching artists. Depending on the track a participant chooses they will be learning about video production, audio production, game code design, or animation. Classes typically start off with a loose check-in, transition into a “hands on” demo and/or group discussion led by the instructor and an activity to apply that knowledge (i.e. putting together a storyboard, looping an audio mix, configuring shot list, etc.). Classes typically end with a reflection to debrief what was learned.
Q: Can I stay in Next Gen for multiple semesters?
A: Yes! You can choose to stay in your current track or switch to a different track at the end of each semester. For example, you can enroll in the Factory (video production) track in the fall and switch to the BUMP (audio production) track in the spring, or choose to participate in Factory for the entire year of programming.

Q: My child likes photography. Do you think this program would be a good fit?
A: Yes. Our Factory class offers video production training which is very similar to photography though it requires a few more skills.
