From The BAVC Media Archives: Remembering Loni Ding

This piece was originally written by Moriah Ulinskas (former Preservation Program Director, and former Director of Next Gen Programs at BAVC Media) in February 2010. This morning I received news that Loni Ding passed away on February 20 after a long year following a stroke last Spring. I hadn’t seen or spoken to Loni since before the stroke, and hearing that she had passed triggered a string of memories that left me crying at my desk for the first hour of the day. I’ve spent the morning emailing back and forth with my friend Alison Wong, who, along with myself, was [...]

“Crip Camp” to Premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival

Throughout New York State in the 1970s The People's Video Theater was producing documentary programs using Sony PortaPak cameras. At the time, this technology was cutting-edge, and these programs chronicled the counterculture and liberation movements that transformed the politics of America. The collective’s mission was to explore the capabilities of the video medium for creative self-expression and community empowerment. The real-time recording and playback capabilities of this new video medium allowed The People's Video Theater to capture material and play it back for their subjects immediately. This “feedback” capability enabled participants to shape their own stories on-screen, and to initiate [...]

Celebrating BAVC Media’s Next Gen Youth Program

Throughout the year Next Gen students built a fun and supportive community where they learned new technical skills, met industry professionals, earned college credit, and discussed social justice issues all while creating media related to topics they are passionate about. In both the Fall and Spring semesters, students created their own media and developed their own stories in the form of animations, short films, and video games (just to name a few).  They also had the opportunity to meet an array of guest speakers and panelists from companies like Pandora, Youtube, Oracle, and KQED with backgrounds in cinematography, graphic design, [...]

The beginning video students, Reel Life, and the two advanced tracks, Animation and The Factory, all screened their videos together during this showcase, available on this Youtube playlist. The audio production students were busy all [...]

Next Gen Alumni Reflection with Sylvia Colt-Lacayo

Three years ago, I was a scrawny, disabled, 8th grader who was always envious of my artistic family. Art runs in my blood, like a torch passed down my family tree, and I always felt like it wasn’t given to me. That was until I stumbled upon BAVC Media, a community of activists who make social change through their art. After applying to the Next Gen Program, I embarked on a journey I didn’t realize would change my life. I found BAVC Media through my older sister’s friend. She had this awesome blue hair and glasses, and knowing her felt [...]

How did you first hear about BAVC Media?   Oakland School for the Arts Tell us your BAVC Media story.   I attended BUMP records in 2011 during my 11th grade year in high school and it changed my life. I always knew I wanted to do music, but I never knew how. I couldn't get studio time, there's a lot of shady people who will use a young woman to get her into the studio and so BUMP gave me my first start in a safe space. I was able to dedicate my time and energy to a project [...]

How did you first hear about BAVC Media?   From a google search. Tell us your BAVC Media story.  This program has always been a family to me. From Arya, to Ian Davis, or Chris Runde they've always showed support and belief in our capabilities. From learning graphic design, to audio, or studio workflow, this all helped me in my career. I started in the Audio Next Gen. program when I was in the 10th Grade and did Bump, the advanced track, for the following 2 years until my senior year of school. This program gave me the opportunity to [...]

How did you first hear about BAVC Media?   My mom saw the link on School Loop. Tell us your BAVC Media story.  I've always been interested in visual arts, whether that be cartoons, graphic design, or video; so when my mom stumbled upon BAVC Media's link on School Loop, I immediately applied. BAVC Media's The Factory provided me with tools that will benefit my future career. We did basic stuff like professionalism and creating online portfolios as well as learning various units of filmmaking like sound design and cinematography. Looking back at it, The Factory really prepared me for [...]
