Get A Job

If you hate networking, these five tips are for you

If you’re reading this, you’ve definitely heard this frustrating job search advice: “it’s all about who you know.”  You also know that going out and meeting people at mixers, coffees, and informational interviews can give you a huge leg up in applying to jobs. That’s all good and well, but there’s one crucial snag: you’re an introvert. Listen, I get it.  You’re the kind of person who isn’t afraid to spend time alone - in fact, a lot of the time, you’d even prefer it.  You love when your partner goes out of town, and do a jig anytime someone [...]

From Freelance to Google, Video Production Pros Break it Down

September’s Tech Talk Tuesday featured Cleave Frink, Jr. Production Manager and Liz Cabrera, Producer of the Google Developer Studio, video production arm of the Google Engineering team. They gave us a glimpse into how they arrived to their current roles, advice on how to build a career in video production, and how different business settings can influence the types of roles available. You want a job? Start acting like a baby.

People think about job search success in terms of the outcome—landing a job. At BAVC Media, we love when our clients get jobs, but we think their success is defined not by what happens at the end of the search but how clients get there. Anyone who has been through a job search knows the process rarely goes smoothly. In retrospect, the process can look haphazard and chaotic—a series of ups and downs that really only make sense when clients reflect back on the experience. But it can feel confounding and unnerving when they’re in it. The ups might look [...]

These 5 Tips won’t win you a Tony but they could land you the job

A skilled performer seizes the opportunity to practice before taking their act to the stage by going over the script, meditating for focus, and perfecting techniques to connect with their audience. The same goes for the art of job interviewing; practice can make things pretty close to perfect. Last month, jobseekers from the TechSF program benefitted from participating in a mock interview event with members from the LinkedIn Sales Solutions Team. Why our Job Search Success Team works

I wake up early in the morning to run. I put my sneakers by the bed so if I happen to forget it’s a running day, I trip over the shoes when I get up. For a long time I ran past a man sitting on a bench downtown, waiting for his shift to start at the local market. He’d always give me a wave and a happy “Hello.” I could make him out from blocks away and started to look forward to seeing him. Over the months and years, whenever I had an urge to skip the run, I’d [...]

Employers and the Informational Interview

There are countless articles out there touting the benefits to job-seekers of conducting informational interviews to advance their career. For the job-seeker, informational interviews can be a great research tool to learn more about a profession, or a company in which they might be interested. They can build their networks. They might even get a lead on a job prospect. There are surely lots of potential benefits for the person seeking the interview, but employers, or the people giving the interview, might think – what's in it for me? Can I get 30 minutes of your time? When one of [...]

Want a tech job? Stop looking!

So you’ve heard it before, when it comes to scoring a new job in tech, “It’s not what you know but who you know”. Good advice. In fact you’ve probably already come to realize that the online job-hunting routine is just not cutting it. The reality is that if you are looking at tech jobs that are posted right now, it’s already too late. Most jobs get filled by a qualified person who has benefited from the right introduction at the right time, namely before the position became vacant. Trolling job boards will never do that for you. It is [...]
