Experience at Camp Reel Stories

My Experience at Adobe MAX

It all began when I received an email from Esther Pearl (Camp Reel Stories founder), in which she invited me to the great convention: Adobe MAX. At first, I wasn't familiar with the event, so I began a research about it. While going through Adobe's website, I realized how amazing the event was (I was like, yes, I am going!) So, I wrote back to her and did all the necessary arrangements.   It was a 3 day convention, from October 15th to the 17th. In addition, on the 14th, Adobe also had a Student Social at Downtown LA. The [...]

Not only has CRS taught me all the skills I need to create an entire film from start to finish in five days, but it has also taught me to be more aware of the media I consume and how to speak up when I feel like my voice [...]

Working with Dolby

This September, I had the opportunity of a lifetime mixing audio for my short film “After The Storm” with Director of Audio and Visual Production, John Loose, at Dolby studios in San Francisco. During our time at Dolby, we got to interact and experiment with state of the art sound equipment, create foley, and mix “After The Storm” in Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Along with fellow campers Sasha, Clarissa and Truly and CRS staff April and Esther, we learned many crucial lessons about sound in film.   One of the first (and most important lessons) we learned from John is [...]

Why media made by and for girls matters.

To kick off May and our $40K in May Crowdfunding Campaign we asked Student Board Member Maya Alter to blog for us.  Maya has attended Camp Reel Stories for three years and is part of the creative team that produced Brett: The Journey, one of our most watched and requested films ever. Why creating our own Media Matters. I don’t usually have a lot of time to sit down and watch TV, my time for media is usually dedicated to short videos, or Instagram, if anything. Esther asked me that for this post I talk about media that portrays girls [...]

What’s it like to volunteer at Camp Reel Stories?

By Fiona Ryan This year I volunteered for all three weeks of Camp Reel Stories and it’s official—this camp is fun, inspiring, and totally impressive. As a volunteer, you are paired up with a production team of girls and you assist them with whatever they need to make their films happen. This can run the gamut from being an extra set of hands to restoring order and logic. It really just depends on the moment. Our campers tend to be extremely smart, friendly, and creative; so as a volunteer you’re bound to have a great time with them, I know [...]

[GUEST POST] Fiona Rae Ryan at Camp Reel Stories

Camp Reel Stories is an undoubtedly magical place. I came to know this last year at their annual film festival where I saw girls connecting to the beautiful art of cinematography one on one, face to face, like they never have before; and also connecting to a voice inside themselves that otherwise may have not been heard. In a world where movies, television shows, and media in general is endlessly present and also extremely influential, the majority of movie-goers and Netflix-lovers alike really do sustain a distant relationship from the whole process of it, don’t we? As a long time [...]
