Last Witness

Story Structure:
Some secrets refuse to stay buried, and some wounds never fully heal. In 2010, Luuk Meijer, a researcher at the Anne Frank House, discovers Max Heppner’s memoir, I Live in a Chickenhouse. The book implicates Luuk’s father in a wartime murder. Meanwhile, 11-year-old Theo van Daalen unearths an artifact of past violence that sets him on an obsessive journey to uncover the region’s hidden past.

As their independent searches intertwine, flashbacks reveal the same world in 1942, where the Dutch Resistance sought to protect Jewish refugees, including two boys, Felix Goldman and Max Heppner, and their families. When times get desperate, Felix is murdered by the men who were supposed to bring him to safety. One of these men is Luuk’s father. The other, a duplicitous Nazi double agent. Max, only 8 years old, is the sole witness to the brutal murder.
Luuk, desperate to clear his father’s name, sifts through archives and testimonies, and confronts Max. Max refuses to let history be rewritten—he saw Luuk’s father commit the murder. Luuk is still unable to accept the truth.
Meanwhile, Theo pieces together the memories of those who lived through the war. He scours the same woods where Max and Felix once played with his metal detector, unearthing artifacts from the war. He interviews his elders, bringing up a past they would rather forget. And he begins work on a homemade museum, a testament to forgotten lives lost – including Felix’s.
Three years later, Luuk visits Theo, now a teenager. He is awed by the museum. Every detail, every story, painstakingly preserved. Theo and Luuk uncover the final, undeniable evidence: documents proving Luuk’s father was convicted of war crimes. Luuk, devastated, can no longer deny what he fought so hard to disprove.
Luuk and Theo accompany Max to the site of Felix’s murder. Their support allows Max to fully process the trauma. Theo commits to preserving his museum, a monument to truth. Luuk, carrying the weight of his father’s sins, must now reconcile the man he loved with the man he truly was.
In Theo’s museum, Luuk and Max add tokens of remembrance to Theo’s collection. Their journey has rewritten history, not in search of heroes, but in pursuit of truth, memory, and the unbreakable human need to bear witness.
