BAVC Media announces Sofía Córdova as Spring 2016 Artist-in-Residence
San Francisco, CA — Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC Media) is pleased to announce that Sofía Córdova will be the Spring 2016 resident for BAVC Media’s Artist-in-Residence (AiR) program, made possible in part through the generosity of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
The AiR program will give Córdova access to BAVC Media’s state-of-the-art technical facilities and in-house expertise, along with the opportunity to produce work in collaboration with BAVC Media programs. Córdova plans to develop the next chapters of her ongoing video performance, Echoes of A Tumbling Throne (Odas Al Fin De Los Tiempos) through coursework in advanced video post-production. Echoes, which fits into a larger series of mixed media installations, focuses on the various citizens, geographies and ideologies of an imagined future reality in which current social structures have been radically upended.
Born in 1985 in Carolina, Puerto Rico, Córdova received her BFA from St. John’s University in Queens, NY in 2006, and her MFA from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco in 2010. She also completed the one year certificate program at the International Center for Photography in New York in 2006. She has performed at SFMOMA, SOMArts and Galeria De La Raza among other spaces. Her work has been exhibited at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, AMOA/Art House, Southern Exposure, The International Center of Photography as well as other venues internationally. She was awarded the 2014-2015 Kala Fellowship and her work is part of Pier 24’s permanent collection.

Córdova was selected by a panel made up of BAVC Media staff, visual artists and arts professionals, including: Tom Comitta, writer, performer and multimedia artist and BAVC Media's Winter 2015 Artist-in-Residence; Leora Lutz, artist, art educator and writer; Sean Uyehara, Director of Programs at Headlands Center for the Arts; and Matt Sussman, BAVC Media Public Programs and Fellowships Manager.
The primary aims of the AiR program are to provide Bay Area artists with the space and resources to work with media that may include video, audio, web or other interactive media/coding or design/development software, and access to new creative opportunities through facilitated collaboration with BAVC Media programs. Residents may apply BAVC Media’s resources toward a project already underway or to a newly proposed project and will have opportunities to do on-site exhibition and public programs connected to their work.
Each Residency period is three months long, with three residency periods offered annually. In addition to giving a public Artist’s Talk during their respective tenure, all three AiRs will participate in a final group exhibition, scheduled for June 2016 in San Francisco.
