Digital Pathways: Open Source

The Digital Pathways: Open Source class focuses on building a strong grasp of open source programming in order to create interactive visual applications. Participants build upon their knowledge to code projects from scratch in ways that address open technologies and approaches. Students create their own personal apps, as well as code in a group context, utilizing multiple languages. Students are introduced to programming with Processing, a language based around Java that simplifies programming of visual programs and yields immediate graphical output. Within this framework, students learn techniques that are applicable to all computer programming, giving them the confidence to explore other languages easily on a multitude of platforms. Once students become familiar with basic coding concepts, they are encouraged to explore other realms, including Databases, Web Development, and custom software.
