Straight Outta Hunters Point 2 screening and Q&A with Kevin Epps

Event Date:
Sun, 05/20/2012 - 3:00pm - 5:00pm

WHAT: Kevin Epps' follow-up to his acclaimed 2003 documentary Straight Outta Hunters Point returns to his old San Francisco neighborhood, capturing immediacy from the faces and voices of a Black ghetto ravaged by decades of devastating violence, drug use and poverty. Epps observes that most San Franciscans, even longtime residents, have never spent five minutes in the "notorious, conveniently isolated" neighborhood of Bayview-Hunters Point. His fearless, street-level camera approaches kids, cops, parents, educators and thugs. With many residents lacking jobs and affordable housing, there is a prevalent feeling of being oppressed by the establishment from the outside, and by the gangs from within. The film also visits a community garden and observes the ironies of a new property development and potential gentrification. As Peter Hartlaub wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle, "It all adds up to desperation, but not defeat." Director: Kevin Epps. (US 2012) 80 min. plus discussion.
