Bay Area Video Coalition, or BAVC (pronounced “bay-vac”), is a nonprofit media arts center that was founded in 1976 by a coalition of media makers and activists who wanted to find alternative, civic-minded applications for a new technology - PortaPak video. While the technology has continued to evolve, BAVC’s mission to bring increased cultural and economic participation to underserved communities through media, and our belief that telling compelling stories is powerful for both media maker and audience, remains. You know how some people always wondered if the White Stripes were brother and sister or husband and wife? That's what we wondered about Jenny and George Galvez, ETP students who take all their classes at BAVC together. Mystery solved. They're married. And so damn cute!! They're just fun to be around. They always walk through the front door looking like they've chucked all their belongings and have found The Secret To Life and it's all about Oreo cookies or something. We find George's class evals and he's doodled BAVC is RAD! as a cheery thumbs up to us.

So how does a skateboarder from East L.A. hook up with a sultry gal from Massachusetts? In Bay View at Thrasher Magazine, dudes. Duh-uh.

BAVC is please to announce that applications are now available for the 2009 Producers Institute for New Media Technologies.

The Producers Institute is a ten-day residency for eight creative teams (independent producers or public broadcasters) with a shared goal of developing and prototyping a multi-platform project inspired by, or based on a significant documentary project. The intention of the Institute is to develop socially relevant media projects for emerging digital platforms.

The 2009 Institute will be held at the BAVC facility in San Francisco from Friday, May 29th through Sunday, June 7th.

The 2009 Application is due no later than 5pm (PST) on Monday, January 12, 2009.
