BAVC » Nonprofit Institute for New Media Applications

2008 INSTITUTE
APPLICATION DEADLINE:
The 2008 deadline has passed.

With generous support from ZeroDivide and our industry partners, the Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC) is hosting a new media institute specifically to connect Bay Area nonprofit organizations to emerging digital media technologies. Open to all Bay Area 501(c)3 organizations, the inaugural Institute will bring together 10 organizations that have articulated a vision for how they can use a mobile or other new media application to better serve their constituencies, realize their program goals, and maximize the fiscal benefits of operationalizing new technologies within their organization.

In an intensive six days over the course of three weeks, teams of nonprofit staff members (two per organization) will participate in panel discussions, peer roundtables, intense one-on-one project development with technical mentors, new media storytelling workshops, and hands-on prototyping of their ideas. The participants can adapt and develop text, video and audio content for delivery using a range of digital and interactive formats. Organizations may propose a range of delivery strategies, focusing primarily on mobile and broadband technologies. The Institute will provide creative and technical mentors and instructors based on the needs of each project. At the end of five days, all participants will present their projects to a panel of community leaders, foundations and industry sponsors.

There is no cost to participate and all travel and meals will be included (and or reimbursed).

Who can apply?

  • The Institute will accept 10 teams of two people each to participate in the July 2008 Institute.

  • Bay Area nonprofit organizations in all fields are welcome to apply; community organizations focused on the potential to use mobile technologies will be prioritized.

  • Participants in the Institute must be able to attend ALL sessions of Institute programming, and must be regular staff members of their organizations, and not consultants or independent contractors.

  • It is recommended that each organization send one person with some technical background (like a web developer, designer, media maker, programmer, engineer, systems administrator, or other relevant technology field) and one person from program staff (like marketing, communications, development, administration, programming, or community engagement).

  • The organizations must be compensating participants at their regular rate for their work at the Institute.

    When is the Institute?
The Nonprofit Institute for New Media Applications will take place on the following dates. Most sessions will take place at the BAVC facility located at 2727 Mariposa Street, San Francisco

    • Wednesday, July 16 9am – 5pm
    • Thursday, July 17, 9am – 5pm
    • Wednesday, July 23, 9am – 5pm
    • Thursday, July 24, 9am – 5pm
    • Friday, July 25, 9am – 5pm
    • Wednesday, July 30, 9am – 5pm

What kind of work will we do at the Institute? Do I need to have prior technical knowledge?

What you need prior to the Institute is a great idea for how you might strategically use web or mobile technologies to further the mission and vision of your organization. We will help you prototype this idea and give you the tools to help you fully realize it.  No special prior technical knowledge is required of any participants, although an intermediate level of fluency with basic digital media and online networking tools will be helpful.

Here are some ideas to get you thinking and collaborating. You may use ideas from this list, bring in something new, or articulate some combination of both.

    • Use mobile technologies to share media and information with large numbers of recipients
    • Create a blog or vlog, series of podcasts or digital stories that integrates with an existing website to bring new communities into the work of the organization, and create options for advertising revenue
    • Create a social networking application that allows members/users to build a dynamic community around the organization, share user-generated content, build national participation, and connect in meaningful ways with organization staff and each other
    • Develop relevant, media-rich content and fluency with web-based marketing tools to raise the profile and reach of the organization. Think strategically about Facebook, You Tube, MySpace, Blip, and Flickr; get connected via RSS, collect revenue-generating analytics via tubemogul.

What will happen during our 6 days at BAVC?
During the first two days of the Institute, participants will be immersed in a series of panels and roundtables with industry experts to get an intensive immersion in the field of new media technologies, and to find out about the projects that leading nonprofit organizations are developing nationally. During these first two days, participants will also meet with their technical mentors to talk about their projects in detail and make a work plan for the following week. Some homework in between sessions may be required.

On days 3 – 5, participants will be hard at work in the BAVC Innovation Lab and classrooms, working with their mentors and instructors to design and create a project prototype. During this time, participants will also be thinking about how to present their ideas to the funding panel.

On Day 6, organizations will make a five minute presentation and project demonstration, articulating for an audience how new digital media technologies are being implemented to further the impact of the work of the organization.

Ultimately, we want all participants to end the institute with a prototype of a mobile technology product that can be further developed post-institute.

What are the criteria for selection to the Institute?
Project proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

    • Level of innovation, relevancy, and impact
    • Market focus & audience reach
    • Potential of organization to benefit from Institute process
    • Ability of organization to provide sustainable resources to complete the project

Where are the application forms and when are the applications due?
Completed applications must be submitted electronically prior to 5pm PST on Monday, April 7, 2008.
