Willits, Christopher

Christopher Willits is a musician, video artist and expert sound
instructor based in San Francisco. Especially well-known for his
groundbreaking music, Christopher manages to defy genre distinctions
while still defining a "sound" of his own. His numerous solo releases
and collaborations cover a broad spectrum of musical styles, and
include one main commonality: Willits' unique use of the guitar with
custom-made signal processing. Willits has released his music on
numerous record labels including Ghostly International and 12k, and has
performed his music all over the world. His collaborations have
included works with Taylor Deupree, Paul D'Amour (Tool), Brad Laner
(Medicine) Matmos, Kid606, Zach Hill (Hella), and a duo release titled
"Ocean Fire" with Grammy award-winning film composer Ryuichi Sakamoto.
On the academic front, Willits obtained his Master's Degree in
Electronic Music at Mills College and received a fine arts degree in
painting, sculpture, and film/video art at the Kansas City Art
Institute. Willits has been a visiting lecturer at The San Francisco
Art Institute, Oberlin College, St. Lawrence University, and Brown
University. Since teaching his first class at BAVC in 2001, Christopher
has helped build BAVC's digital audio program into the creative and
conceptually diverse collection of course offerings present today.
