BAVC provides fiscal sponsorship for independent media artists who are working on non-commercial projects (sorry, no Spider Man here). In basic terms, fiscal sponsorship extends BAVC’s tax-exempt status to independent film, video, and multimedia projects, broadcast series, and presenting organizations, and allows an individual producer or production company to solicit funds from government, foundation, individual and other philanthropic sources.
As a fiscal sponsor, BAVC processes all project donations, redistributes the funds as necessary, keeps an accounting of all funds raised, and makes records of those transactions available to those who might require it. BAVC maintains these records as required by specific grant guidelines and/or federal law.
FEES
BAVC charges a 7% administrative fee for any monies granted through our fiscal sponsorship program. This fee covers the administrative costs of setting up and processing online and paper donations, redistributing income, maintaining any accounting files, and providing general support and assistance. We do not offer check writing services; all donations and grant monies are processed and paid directly to the producer for project expenses.
APPLYING FOR SPONSORSHIP (click here for application guidelines)
BAVC accepts sponsorship applications on a rolling basis. Applications are reviewed by the Fiscal Sponsorship Coordinator and the Director of Creative Programming, and approved by the BAVC Board of Directors.
To apply for fiscal sponsorship through BAVC, you must be a BAVC member and:
• have demonstrated competence in your medium
• show a strong commitment to and personal involvement in the project
• are proposing a media-based program that is non-commercial in nature and is consistent with BAVC’s mission
• have an effective fundraising and implementation strategy
• have a professional and realistic production and postproduction budget
• have a carefully considered plan of distribution
• will be seeking funds from non-profit sources (e.g. foundations, state or federal government, etc.)
Applications are evaluated on the artistic merit of the program as demonstrated by a clear and considered project narrative; the resumés of the principal production team; the budget, fundraising strategy, and timeline for implementation. Unfortunately, BAVC’s capacity is limited, and we can not accept every project that applies.
BENEFITS OF SPONSORSHIP WITH BAVC
• BAVC has a long history of success with fiscal sponsorship and a strong reputation with funders.
• All fiscally sponsored projects have a profile on the BAVC website, including a link for online donations.
• All fiscally sponsored producers receive a one-hour fundraising and distribution consultation with BAVC's Director of Creative Programming.
• All fiscally sponsored producers are invited to participate in at least three professional development workshops each year at BAVC, including information sessions on a variety of topics including fundraising, legal issues, story development, distribution, and new technologies.
Please note:
BAVC does not influence the content or creative aspects of projects; copyright and ownership of intellectual property remain with the artist. Producers are required to keep accurate project accounting records, and supply BAVC with mid-year, and end-of-year budget and narrative progress reports. BAVC reserves the right to audit projects budgets at any time. Funding received through a fiscal sponsor is considered income to the project for tax purposes.
For beginning or emerging producers, we recommend taking the BAVC class Planning and Managing A Video Project prior to submitting your application for sponsorship.
Samples of successful fiscal sponsorship applications are available upon request.
