From its inception, BAVC has championed storytelling as a powerful way to create social change. As technologies change, it is the stories that remain at the heart of our mission.
We believe that in the process of articulating and crafting one’s own story, individuals develop vital critical thinking, communication, and leadership skills that serve as a foundation for personal transformation and healing. We also believe that telling stories can inspire maker and audience alike to take positive action within their own families and the community at-large. And stories can be powerful advocacy tools for systems level changes in the community, often clearly showing how various interpersonal, social, economic and political factors shape our lives.
Program Objectives
Through innovative programs that focus equally on dynamic storytelling processes and the impact of the resulting media in communities, BAVC has a long history of helping nonprofit organizations tell stories using media tools. Our work in this area includes instruction, digital storytelling curriculum and resources, distribution and outreach assistance, and programmatic, editorial, and technical consultation and assistance. These programs:
-
Empower nonprofit staff members and constituencies to use media technologies
-
Use personal narrative as a means of personal and communal change, healing, reflection, and empowerment
-
Generate powerful digital media that can be used to share the nonprofit story, educate a wider audience on important issues, provide a forum for advocacy, raise funds for an organization
