Engaging Your Students Through Digital Media
T3 (Train the Teacher) has a new name and a new curriculum! BAVC is proud to be an Adobe Youth Voices Training Center and as such, provide training and support for Bay Area teachers using a
variety of Adobe products in real-world projects. Both public and private school teachers are eligible for
this free training, as well as students in a credentialed teacher program.
With generous support from Adobe Foundation, the AYV Training Center
program offers free instruction to K-16 teachers in a series of
hands-on workshops that will not only build expertise in selected Adobe
software programs, but help teachers engage middle- and high-school
aged youth through multimedia, video, digital photography and web.
BAVC's AYV Program offers training in Digital Photography, Adobe
Photoshop, Adobe Dreamweaver, Video Preproduction, Video Production and
Adobe Premiere. Classes will be offered during the traditional school
summer breaks to accommodate teacher schedules. Teachers can sign up
for individual workshops or combine classes to create an entire
overview for projects.
Adobe Youth Voices is particularly interested in providing training to
teachers who work in underserved communities--if that's you, you will
be given first priority on classes. The program is designed to "create
with purpose," and all participating teachers will be asked to send in
student work that uses Adobe's multimedia tools.
If you have already been accepted into the program, register for the classes through BAVC's online registration system (you must be a registered user of the website to use the online system).
What You Can Learn
This summer you'll be able to opt in for one class or create 3-day, project-based bundles by enrolling in consecutive workshops. All free, of course! Classes will be held from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm with an hour break for lunch and will focus on photography, web and video.
Digital Photography: Creating Images For The Web
Using this powerful medium to express oneself or an idea has never been
more popular or ubiquitous and today's youth respond dramatically to
the visual accessibility of photos. Learn how to master camera
settings, compose a creative shot and use light to create
thought-provoking digital images. Using your own photos, you'll learn
how even basic Adobe Photoshop tools can open up a world of visual
possibilites for you and your students. Teachers are encouraged to
bring their own cameras, although BAVC will provide some, as well. This
1-day class is designed for beginners.
Adobe Photoshop: How It Works On The Web
Discover how to use the tools in Adobe Photoshop to create influential
and effective images for a website. You'll learn how to import and save
images at the correct resolution for the internet, create page layouts,
use basic HTML and understand why knowing how to use Photoshop has
joined the ranks of "reading, writing and 'rithmetic"! This 1-day class is
designed for beginners.
Web Basics: Engaging Students Through Community
Your students know the widespread appeal of the internet but do they
know how to actually create a website? Do you? Enroll in this 1-day class to
learn the basics of building a website, including proper planning and
organization, simple coding with Adobe Dreamweaver, publishing and
maintaining your site--the unprecedented way to show the world what
your students are communicating. This class is designed for beginners.
Web: The Next Steps
Want to dive deeper? Learn how to use typography, templates, navigation, basic coding and interactivity to create even more compelling classroom sites. This 2-day class will incorporate Adobe Dreamweaver and Adobe Flash and is designed for intermediate and advanced teachers or quick-learning teachers who are tech-savvy. Not sure if you're at the right level? Email BAVC's Program Resources Lead, Keith Battle, at keith[at]bavc[dot]org.
Planning Your Video Project
Do you know that old adage "measure twice, cut once"? That's what mapping out your video project in advance can do for you and your students. Enroll in this 1-day class to learn how you can organize your project, determine roles and shooting locations, storyboard your ideas, write scripts, prepare props, check that production equipment is working correctly--in short, how to end up with a video that communicates what you want it do! This class is designed for beginners and for those teachers who want a refresher in planning.
Shooting Your Video
This comprehensive 1-day class is designed for teachers who want to work with their students to produce student video projects. You'll learn the step-by-step basics of operating a video camera, effective and easy shooting techniques, how lighting plays an important role and how to use audio equipment, such as microphones, to capture the best picture and sound. All equipment will be provided but teachers are encouraged to bring their own video cameras, if desired. This class is designed for beginners and for those teachers who want a refresher in production.
Editing Your Video
This 1-day class will help you understand the heart and nature of storytelling through editing. Using Adobe Premiere, you will stitch your video clips together, introduce music to create dramatic effect, include still images and create titles for clarifying your message. You'll learn how video can be a terrific communication medium by featuring the clips that "move your story forward" and leaving the extraneous clips "on the editing room floor." This class is designed for beginners and for those teachers who want a refresher in edting.
