SIGNING UP

As of March 1, 2010, BAVC membership is required of all SF Commons producers. Once you are a BAVC member, the only step to participating in SF Commons is to attend a brief orientation meeting where you hear about our policies, procedures, and services, sign a Statement of Compliance, and (if you plan to be the lead producer of a program) submit your Proof of Residence. Orientations are free, are open to anyone, and are typically held in conjunction with public events (open mic nights, special seminars, and community events), which are held the last Monday of every month from 6:00 - 8:00pm at 2727 Mariposa Street, 2nd Floor. Orientations may also be conducted in small groups by appointment. Contact us to sign up for an orientation or schedule an appointment. Once you have attended an orientation and are in our database, you can access other services, which include:

PROGRAMMING: DELIVERING YOUR SHOW

Once you have attended an orientation (where you sign a Statement of Compliance and provide Proof of Residence), you may drop off your program at BAVC on DVD (2727 Mariposa Street, 2nd Floor, between 9:00am and 7:00pm, Monday - Friday). Programs must arrive in our hands at least two business days before their scheduled air time.  You may also submit programs by mail.  For specials (one-off programs, as opposed to recurring series), please include a completed Playback Application.  We have copies here that you can pick up next time you stop by. Send your DVDs (and Playback Forms, for specials) to:

SF Commons
c/o BAVC
2727 Mariposa, 2nd Floor
San Francisco, CA 94110

We are also developing ingest stations and workflow that will allow producers to deliver their media to us by dragging and dropping their file to a shared folder at the front workstations. As soon as this is up and running, producers will be required to drag-and-drop their own DVD files to the server so we can save staff time for supporting other services. (Don't worry, we'll walk you through it.) The process should take just a few minutes for each DVD; and the benefit is that you can then take your DVD with you rather than return to pick it up. For specials, we also hope to be able to schedule your program right on the spot so you can begin to promote your program.

TRAININGS & CERTIFICATIONS

Any SF Commons member may access trainings & certifications. There are currently three types of training available: Flash studio, Production, and Postproduction. You must be certified in order to use the equipment. Certifications are inexpensive; roughly $10 per hour of training. A full certification schedule and the ability to register online is now available. If we can verify that you have already accessed the equipment (completed a training on the gear, or rented it from Accessf) within the past year, you do not need to attend a full training; you may simply attend a brief Certification (one to two hours) to demonstrate your capability with the gear and to become certified to reserve and use that gear.

PRODUCTION FIELD KITS

Three single-camera kits (two PD170s and one PD150 with audio equipment), and light and sound kits, are now available for reservations. Reservations may be made up to two months in advance, for up to three consecutive days, and a producer may hold up to five reservations at any time. If you have a kit checked out, and you need it for a longer period of time, you can call back on the day it is due to see if you are able to extend the reservation. Late returns are billable at $20 per day, and are due by 6:00pm on the day of return. To reserve a kit, just call or stop by.

EDIT STATIONS

Three edit suites (with iMovie and Final Cut Pro) are now available for reservations. Producers may reserve the edit suites during any regular program hours.

FLASH STUDIO: LIVE SHOWS & RECORDINGS

The Flash Studio is a single-operator studio with three cameras, lights, and sound that can be used for live call-in programs or for simple, single-operator recording. A Producer must be trained and certified to utilize the Flash Studio.

* For live shows: Live, recurring studio show time slots are now available and are subject to the same programming procedures as series; to choose an available time slot, show up to a monthly programming meeting to select your time.

* For recording: Producers may reserve the Flash Studio for recording during any regular business hours when the studio is not being used for live programs or training/certifications. To reserve the Flash Studio for recording, call or stop by.

PRODUCTION SPACE

Members (at the Producer Level) may reserve our multipurpose room for production for up to four hours per month.  The main studio is a single room with an overhead lighting grid and control panel, backdrop options of a black velvet drape, a blue screen, or white wall, and handheld mics and mic stands. Certified producers may also reserve and check out field gear to use in the space. (Note: the control room is currently not available for training/certification or use.)
