YouthLink » Printer-friendly version

YouthLink is a media-training program that employs young people to realize their creative voices, explore career options, and contribute to their communities.

During after-school hours students develop a portfolio in digital arts or video production, gaining skills in artistry, teamwork, storytelling, critical thinking, technical troubleshooting and community engagement. Students share their projects online (www.youthzine.org) and at community screenings.

During summer internships in the media field students gain new technical and professional skills, expanding their career and educational opportunities.

Throughout YouthLink students receive professional, artistic and personal support from a committed team of instructors, peer mentors, and staff.

All YouthLink students receive:

  • Expertise and hands-on training from professional mediamakers
  • Opportunities to showcase projects and effect positive community change
  • Career development workshops
  • Access to BAVC's labs and production equipment
  • $380 stipend for completing Beginning YouthLink
  • $480 stipend for completing Advanced YouthLink
  • 60 hour paid internship at $10 per hour
  • School credit for qualifying juniors and seniors
  • Support for your future educational and career goals

Video Production students learn:
Beginning Video Production:
Storytelling, video production, and postproduction, including lighting, sound, shooting techniques and editing on Final Cut Pro

Advanced Video Production:
Collaborative story development, advanced shooting techniques, editing and sound aesthetics, and distribution

Digital Arts students learn:
Beginning Digital Arts:
HTML, Photoshop, Image Ready, Dreamweaver, and design principles

Advanced Digital Arts:
Flash, Advanced Photoshop, Illustrator information architecture, and professional portfolio development

Program Dates:
Please note students choose Digital Arts or Video Production, and must complete Beginning, Advanced and the Summer Internship.

Beginning Video Production and Digital Arts classes:
June 19 - August 18, 2006
Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday, 3:30 - 7 pm
3 Saturdays or Sundays, TBD

Advanced Video Production and Digital Arts classes:
September 11 - December 8, 2006
Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday, 4 - 6:30 pm
3 Saturdays or Sundays, TBD

Summer Internships
60 hours completed in July and August, schedules vary
