"I've been in the field of animation for 30 years. The technology progresses exponentially every year, which makes my job easier and more complicated. Our staff uses ETP dollars to stay current with technology, compete with labor overseas, keep production efficient and maintain the highest standards for our clients." --Phil Robinson, Animation Director, Wild Brain Inc.
It seems too good to be true, but through a state agency called the Employment Training Panel, BAVC has been providing industry-authorized training to employees at qualifying companies at no cost for the last nine years. Over the years, BAVC has trained employees from a range of companies including: AQKA, Apple, Wells Fargo, KTVU, WildBrain Inc., Gap Inc., and Lucas Films LTD, among many others.
The Employment Training Panel (ETP) is a business and labor supported state agency that assists employers in strengthening their competitive edge by providing funds to offset the costs of job skills training necessary to maintain high-performance workplaces.
Currently, this training is fully subsidized at no cost to California-based employers through October 2008.
What does that mean? It means that, right now, employees at qualifying companies train at BAVC for free. It means that a diverse range of companies are building their skills and increasing their competitive edge in our classrooms.
Current areas of training include:
ETP Profile: Current TV
You’re probably already familiar with Current TV – launched in 2005, it was founded by Al Gore and Joel Hyatt. The network and website offer short-form programming they call “pods,” much of which is submitted by viewers.
Current TV signed up for the ETP program at BAVC in early 2006. Since then, 27 employees have taken over 100 classes, with subjects ranging from Photoshop to Post Production Fundamentals, Avid to After Effects.
“Final Cut Pro classes are very popular, as it is an essential skill for many of our jobs,” says Taryn Ching, Current TV Human Resources Coordinator and the ETP program liaison. “The majority of Current TV participants in the BAVC ETP Program are our programming department staff – the people who produce pods, edit content, screen viewer-created submissions, and create the programming for Current TV.”
Corinna Fisher, Current TV’s Scheduling Supervisor, says, “I love it. The instructors are all experts in the field. The facilities are great. Overall, BAVC is a great resource for people in this industry.”
