Watch: The Factory's Summer Community Filmmaking Partnerships

Earlier this month, The Factory -- BAVC's advanced video production program for young artists -- presented the  Community Filmmaking Partnership documentaries they produced this summer in partnership with the SF Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC). Working with four local nonprofits chosen by the Commission, Factory filmmakers created films which highlight how different communities are responding to environmental changes, specifically around the timely issue of water and energy usage.

The Factory, BAVC's advanced video production program for youth, is turning ten! Factory student films have screened at the San Francisco International Film Festival, Mill Valley Film Festival, AFI Silverdocs, and have won numerous awards.

Faced with having to navigate through a roomful of adults who might not otherwise take notice of BAVC's intrepid youth filmmakers, Factory-student Judy Lee came up with a foolproof networking initiative. The group's strategy of making eye contact and striking up conversations with professionals resulted in a meeting and photo-op with the producer of Fruitvale Station, Ephraim Walker (second from left, below).

Lily, 17: A Mid-Career Retrospective

Lily Yu— a filmmaker in BAVC's Factory program— is the first-ever youth filmmaker to screen three films in the same year at the San Francisco International Film Festival as well as the first filmmaker ever with two films in competition for the Golden Gate Award. She recently won Best in Show at Project Youth View for Limitations; the grand prize included $500 and a private mid-career retrospective at the Dolby Theater. She is also 17 years old.

An after-school film program gets a crash course in documentary filmmaking when they make a film about their teacher getting her hair done. Made for the 2013 International Documentary Challenge.

Teacher's Weave was created by Factory filmmakers as a part of the 2013 International Documentary Challenge, a five-day competitive filmmaking event undertaken by more than 100 teams around the world. The young filmmakers documented the process of their teacher getting a hair weave and considered the cultural complications involved the "hair trade."
