Background

The Bay Unity Music Project (BUMP) was launched in 2004 as a training program for youth who wanted to learn to produce and record original music using digital technology. In addition to providing technical training, the program brought in local artists from the community to do workshops on a variety of topics, such as artistic responsibility and social justice. The program's immediate popularity affirmed a demand in the community for technology-intensive and culturally relevant arts programming.

In tandem with establishing a core in-house program, BUMP also created an off-site component called BUMP Beats. BUMP Beats allowed the program to partner with a wide range of schools and CBOs to bring BUMP's road-tested curriculum and instructors into classrooms and computer labs throughout the Bay Area. At its height, BUMP Beats programming was running at 14 sites in 4 counties.

BAVC is now making the BUMP Beats curriculum and teaching resources available for FREE via the BAVC website. Anyone interested in offering a structured and engaging digital music production class for youth is welcome to use these resources. To supplement these materials, the BUMP Beats Teacher Training workshop will allow educators and service providers to learn first-hand how to successfully launch and run their own music production programming.

FAQ
  • When/where is the training happening? The training will run from June 21-25, 2010 at BAVC's Townsend Street facility at 4th and Townsend Streets in San Francisco.
  • How much does the training cost? The training is free, but we are requesting a refundable $100 deposit to hold a spot in the class.
  • Who should apply? Teachers, after-school programming providers, and staff from community-based organizations who are interested in running BUMP Beats programming are encouraged to apply.
  • Do I need to have a background in music or audio production? No. While any previous experience is helpful, it is not required to participate. We will teach you what you need to know!
  • Do I need to attend the entire week of training in order to be in the class? Because we want all participants to leave the training with the maximum amount of knowledge and hands-on experience, we strongly encourage applicants to attend the entire session. However, depending on demand for the class, we may consider accepting applicants who are available for less than the entire week. If you are concerned about this, please contact us to discuss your situation.
